Hurricane Preparedness: Canine Style

Thus continues the adventures of four furried siblings. Jack, Pomeranian and resident advisor. Lori Darlin', a working and herding dog by nature becomes a nervous Nellie during bad weather. Gracie, activist for the Hispanic race and a long-eared hopeless romantic. And finally, Liddy B., also known as "the kid" and has all the makings of a future parolee.

36 hours to ETA:

Have mom purchase extra dog food, Cognac, flea collars, valium and treats. Monitor weather via local news. Put Lassie on speed dial.

24 hours to ETA :

Sound the trumpet & call all troops to kitchen. Give quick overview of posts. Ration treats.

Make sure proper bedding is available and in place:

Lori Darlin' - bathtub.

Gracie - between bed and wall on mom's side.

Liddy - wherever there is a free spot.

Jack - in bed between mom and dad.

12 Hours to ETA:

Refer to previous hurricane checklist for Katrina (remember that mom and dad prefer not to flee our home and ride it out). Console Lori Darlin' and make sure her bunker is secure. Administer valium, artillery helmets with headlights, Kevlar vets, boots, safety goggles, floatation devices and rope. Find nose plugs and swim cap and get to Gracie as needed.

6 Hours to ETA:

Run quick drill for water and food bowl line. Make sure Lori Darlin' and Gracie have taken a proper dose of valium. Roll up Gracie's ears and pin them. Remind Liddy there is nothing to be scared of and not to chase the after the wind or any fallen sticks. Secure weights around Jack's stomach.

2 Hours to ETA:

Again, check to see if Lori Darlin' is comfortable. Administer an extra dose of valium if she appears too alert and secure chin strap for her helmet. Same for Gracie. Administer breathalyzer test to Jack - depending on results make sure Cognac is secured in a spot AWAY from him. Remind Liddy again that the wind is not something she can ride and that looting is something they do in major cities. Make sure mom and dad are in eyesight at all times.

Buy the ticket and ride it out!

Your writing actually pulled me into the prep for the inevitable. Nice composition and continuity along with a sense of knowing all will be ok.I always like content or happy endings.

Loved it!! My LULU and Lori Darlin' have the same profile!! I have found her in the bathtub in the middle of a thunderstorm with the curtain closed!!
