The misuse of the acronym… Lol
Lol, sorry your grandmother died.
Do you think it is funny that his grandmother died?
The 3 letters that are widely used over internet chat rooms and other text communication devices are overly used and abused. In case you haven't found out what LOL is, LOL stands for: Laugh out loud. People have also abbreviated for other meanings, such as: Lots of love, Lots of laugh and so on, you get the idea.
So basically, being one of the most said abbreviation/word in Cyber Space, it is highly misused. As prior to the example above “Lol, sorry your grandmother died”, is a complete offence to the persons grandmother, translate the previous sentence, and you will have something along the lines of: “Hahaha, Sorry your grandmother died”.
Put yourself in that situation, how would you feel if someone said that to you?
People have used excuses for saying “Lol”, one of my friends comment:
“Well, if I don't say it, people will think I'm too serious or something” - Anonymous.
Well Anonymous, why do you feel that you sound serious if you do not say “Lol”? I myself rarely use “Lol”, not too mention, the grammar that I always apply to myself when I am on chat rooms or other cyber communication programs.
I do not find the mass over-use of the word “Lol” annoying, but it just confuses me on why people do it. An example MSN chat log:
Nobody You Know says:
Hey
Nobody You Know 2 says:
Sup
Nobody You Know says:
I got that new Playstation 3 Game!
Nobody You Know 2 says:
Lol?
Nobody You Know says:
You laugh at me?
Nobody You Know 2 says:
Lol
Nobody You Know has left the conversation.
So basically, the Nobody You Know, kid, was probably annoyed or something. Nobody You Know, isn't the only victim, there are many people that I know that have a "grudge" against the 3 letters. They are annoyed every time when someone uses “Lol” inappropriately or for no particular reason.
This isn't a rant article, or a debate, but simply, to explain to you, the over-use of the word Lol.
