Parking Lot Etiquette

Dos and don'ts of parking lot courtesy.

Can’t we all just get along?! One way to start is by showing a little courtesy, especially in the Supermarket Parking Lot. It’s not that difficult to do. Peek shopping hours are always hectic, and we all deserve a break, so please be mindful of some simple do’s and donts…

You know how Supermarkets have a fire lane? And they have the yellow painted crosswalk for people to get back to their car? Don’t you hate it when somebody is parked in the fire lane and they’re right next to that crosswalk and they don’t even have a turn signal on or their hazard lights, and you pull up behind them and try to figure out what they’re doing, and you can’t see people starting to cross with their shopping carts, and next thing you know, some teenager comes running out with a 12 pack of beer and some cigarettes! People, please, that fire lane is a courtesy, not for beer runs!

Have you ever driven into a crowded lot and circled around trying to find a reasonable parking space, and you’re watching people go to their cars, and finally a good spot is going to open up, and you wait there with your turn signal on, you plan on pulling in, but then it all goes wrong; the people are having problems getting their bags out of a cart, or there’s a trunk malfunction, and next thing you know there’s like 5 cars behind you waiting to get past so they can circle around! You have to make the decision, do I wait 3 more minutes, or do I go?! Just go, it’s embarrassing! You’ll get your spot, stop blocking traffic!

People with small children, please, I know it sounds demeaning, but consider putting your child on a leash! You get out of the car to enter the store, and you get your kid out, and next thing you know, Junior is sprinting through the lot! I know it’s illegal to talk on your cell phone and drive, but whatever a distraction might be, with this kind of kid, tragedy is certain! Just consider it, please…

Okay, Shopping Carts. People sometimes leave them in the lot after they unload the groceries. They just take off and forget all about it. So there are two problems: #1: Have you ever turned into a spot and just barely stopped before smashing into a cart?! Or the classic, have you ever come out of the store to find a shopping cart wedged into your bumper because SUV Man plowed into and didn’t stop, he just plowed it into you?! Don’t do that!

Last but not least: Handicap spots. Its one thing to see an empty vehicle in a Handicap spot during the middle of the day, but the worst is to see a vehicle with no tag, with some guy behind the wheel waiting for someone! Get real people! There are Handicap people that need this space!

Well if that’s you in the Handicap Spot, waiting for your buddy, please do us a favor, and maybe just go wait for your buddy, and your beer, in the fire lane!
