My best friend and I were pregnant with our first children at the same time. She delivered a beautiful baby girl 6 weeks before my daughter was born.
I had waited until the baby was born to shop for the gift to take to the hospital and see the new mother with her bundle of joy. I worked most of the day and took off to go to the doctor for my check up, go to Macy's to shop, go to the bank, and get gas before I headed to the hospital. As can happen in November in the Midwest, it was starting to sleet and I was running late from my errands. I knew my friend and our husbands would be worried if I was too late (this was before cell phones) and I was in a hurry by the time I pulled in to get gas. This was in the days where there was still an attendant that pumped the gas for you.
There was a line of cars and only one attendant who was on the phone. I got out of the car and waddled into the building. He waved at me and said he was on the phone with his boss. I said “Tell your boss you have a pregnant lady on her way to the hospital!” and I walked back out to my car. He got off that phone and had my gas pumped in record time all the while wanting to know if I was okay to drive. His wife had just had a baby a few weeks earlier. I assured him I could make it there.
My friend laughed and laughed as I told the story, but both our husbands thought I was deceitful and horrible! I told them I didn't lie--I was a pregnant lady on the way to the hospital. Maybe their lack of sense of humor is what later lead to our divorces from them!
