A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Hospital

Sharing a laugh with my friend on the day her first child was born.

My best friend and I were pregnant with our first children at the same time. She delivered a beautiful baby girl 6 weeks before my daughter was born.

I had waited until the baby was born to shop for the gift to take to the hospital and see the new mother with her bundle of joy. I worked most of the day and took off to go to the doctor for my check up, go to Macy's to shop, go to the bank, and get gas before I headed to the hospital. As can happen in November in the Midwest, it was starting to sleet and I was running late from my errands. I knew my friend and our husbands would be worried if I was too late (this was before cell phones) and I was in a hurry by the time I pulled in to get gas. This was in the days where there was still an attendant that pumped the gas for you.

There was a line of cars and only one attendant who was on the phone. I got out of the car and waddled into the building. He waved at me and said he was on the phone with his boss. I said “Tell your boss you have a pregnant lady on her way to the hospital!” and I walked back out to my car. He got off that phone and had my gas pumped in record time all the while wanting to know if I was okay to drive. His wife had just had a baby a few weeks earlier. I assured him I could make it there.

My friend laughed and laughed as I told the story, but both our husbands thought I was deceitful and horrible! I told them I didn't lie--I was a pregnant lady on the way to the hospital. Maybe their lack of sense of humor is what later lead to our divorces from them!

The story was really funny, and I don't think you were deceitful at ALL. In fact, I would have said the same thing without even thinking how it might have sounded! I probably wouldn't have realized it until he offered to drive!! Good story. Made me smile.

Nice funny story. Poor attendant he was already thinking how he'll have to hepl you deliever the baby.
It would be a good idea to have a pillow handy in a car so when there is a line just stuff it under the shirt.

I like your story. I think that the gas station should have had better service especially with some one that’s pregnant

What a great and homey story. As you have used your pregnancy, sometimes I have had to use my age (I have naturally white hair so I look older) to get people to help me a little quicker than they would help someone other. I am going to pass you story on because it is so good.

I really enjoyed reading your story. I don't think there is anything wrong with what you did at all! We all do what we have to do right? Good story!

I don't think I could have brought myself to do that, but it is a funny story to tell.
