Cell Phone Mania: Why are We So Obsessed with Cell Phones?

It has come to my attention that the nation puts way to much time into picking the perfect cell phone that will go out of style within a months time. Hundreds of years ago we lived without the gadgetry, why can't we now?

I remember back in high school when my friend Emily had received her first cell phone for her birthday. It was one of those monstrosities that was big enough to connect to the entire planet or at least make us look cool, so we thought.

The main purpose back then was for our parents to keep a close on eye on where we were at all times, forgetting that kids will be kids.

However, the times have changed, the cell phone industry has revolutionized, and people have become much more dependant on a invention that meant so little years ago, at least when then first came out.

After years of use and overcharges from cell phone companies, I kicked mine to the curb and I now us it for an alarm clock and nothing else.

So why are so many people obsessed with having a cell phone terminally attached to their ear at all times? I guess in my eyes it may make them feel more important or they just feel the need to broadcast their entire lives to the free world while speaking out load on their Nextels and speaker's.

There is nothing more annoying than standing behind someone in a checkout lane and the person in front of you is speaking on their cell phone, ignoring the constant waving of the cashier to swipe their card or give them money so they can get the heck out of their line.

Even when I walk the college campus, after classes are dismissed, students frantically reach for their cell phones, iphones, and whatever else is the latest gadgetry and permantly place it to their ear while walking the 5 steps to their next class afraid they will miss what their friends had for breakfast.

Or maybe, they're keeping up with the lastest episode of Spongebob Squarepants or Beavis and Butthead making sure they have their fill of educational material for the day, not concerning themselves with the F they just received on their Math test.

One of my personal experiences with a cell phone was at my restaurant during a busy Friday night. I was working on the hotline with one of my employees and they had the audacity to pick up their cell phone when it rang. Imagine my surprise when he just kept on talking even when I gave him the look of death.

This is where it gets exceedingly interesting. I proceeded to grab the cell phone from his ear and with the most stern voice I could muster up I said "If you ever want to see the light of day, you will not pick up that cell phone on my line again or I will through it directly into the deep fryer."

I'm sure you're all thinking how harsh this is, considering everytime I worked at a corporate restaurant, the managers and chefs wouldn't give a second glance to a line cook answering his cell phone on bended knee so they wouldn't be seen.

So what may you ask is my point? My point is that there is a word called RESPECT, and so many people have no idea what that means. We survived a depression, the Gread Flood, and War so surely consumers can live without cells phones.

Shhh Lauren the Cypriots are talking on their phones! The are always on the phone, I had never seen anything like it until I moved here. I have one and it is for when I drive in the hills as there are no public phones or private lines there. Great article and I love your 'stern' story.

Ok, ok I know how ridiculous this all is but, most of it stems from students answering phones in the classroom during lecture.
It's disrespectful to people that are trying to learn and the professor.

Personally I find cell phones very annoying. Why people would want to share their private conversations in public is beyond me. Great article my friend.

The word RESPECT is very much appropriate, especially in time of work and inside the classroom. People should know when and where to use their cellphones!
Great post!

There's a time and a place to use cell phones. Unfortunately it's too often people choose the wrong time and place to use them. I hate to talk on the phone and drive and rarely do, it can sit there an ring in my back pocket while I pay for something and I will NEVER use it in the restroom unless I'm calling 911! And let's hope I never have to call 911 while in the restroom! Too much disrepect when it come to cell phone use.

Lauren, creative and well-written. I agree with you and do limit the use of my cell phone. I remember a trip to Italy back in 1998 where I saw that everyone on the street had a phone. It woke me up to the new realities, before it was so huge in the USA. I love your creativity! Brian

i agree in some of these views, they are good for emergencies on the road or checking on your child
and i believe they come in handy if plans suddenly changed while you were out and u needed to touch quick bases
on the other hand i see them used DANGEROUSLY ,while ppl.r driving and they are so consumed in their talk they almost hit u or texting while driving is horrible, last little kids under 10 should not have one...it is ridiculous! nice article, there is a time and place 4 them:)

oh oh i got one, how bout when you are a cashier at a convenience store and the customers cant stop talking on their cells long enough to tell you how much gas they got, they just throw money at you and walk away

i hate the way people think that the world stops for them just because their cell went off. what happened to common curdecy?

tell em how it is lauren. love the article! gonna stumble this one! have a great day!

Just got sent this, and yes, I also take issue with people who believe that anyone on the other end of a call is more important than those around them... cell phone or not.

I can understand if it's business, or Really important...

otherwise, it's just the spreading rudeness and lack of good upbringing.
