The weekend was nice. My best friend came into town and we spent the day together, hair, toes, lunch. Plus she had to spend time with my kitten, Toby. Her favorite of all time are orange and white and that is just what he is. He is also extremely friendly; let’s everyone pick him up and just purrs and purrs.
Sunday was spent looking for cars with my mother. Since she crashed hers into a pole, she is looking for a new one. Well, not new, but recently owned. Which reminds me – I saw a commercial some time ago about a dealership that was actually calling their used cars used cars instead of the PC formerly owned. She has finally decided what she might be interested in purchasing which helps a lot. She has decided that she likes the looks of Nissans currently. That is fine with me. My current car is a Nissan Sentra (gently used) and I absolutely love it. Because I bought it used, I was lucky enough to get one that has all kinds of extras that drive the price up. It is just too sad for me that the economy hadn’t tanked as much back in January or I would have been able to get a better deal.
My tests were on Monday for the school district position. I’m glad I asked how to dress. They were requesting more than jeans and tennis. There were also a couple of men who made the cut. You don’t see that as often. My last major job, we had a male temp come in. He was actually quite good, but the male brokers were uncomfortable having him in that subservient a position.
Watched “Dancing With the Stars” finale on Monday and was very impressed with all of the finalists. Lance and Lacey were good, but I just do not like hip-hop, especially the music that goes with it. Brooke and Derek scored perfect for their free-style and it was GREAT! Warren and Kym were very good also. I remembered to vote and am anxiously awaiting the final results to air on Tuesday. I personally am rooting for Brooke and Derek. Overall, they were the most consistent and best most of the time.
Unfortunately, my tests did not go well. I passed the “test” part; however, did not pass their written test. Evidently, my business experience does not translate to the scholastic world. It was very disappointing. I was hoping to at least make it to the interview stage. I must admit, I cried. It would have been nice to make it past the test stage; however, it was nice to know that I was one out of 49 of the original 170 who applied. Now I am working on getting letters of recommendation for another position at another school. Letters of recommendation are not usually required, as most companies do not allow them any more, probably because of the liability.
Today is the day after Thanksgiving and I will be taking my mother to shop for cars. I think she likes wasting my time. She does need a new car, but so far, she hasn’t bothered to drive any of them. Besides, I basically spent the day with her yesterday. Because all she talks about are her illnesses, or what my brother and sister-in-law do wrong raising their children, I left the radio loud enough to sing along while driving to my brother’s home for the meal. It was just as I expected except that my brother didn’t appear to be drinking as much as usual. Fortunately, he noticed that one of my tires was very low and was able to put in air, but he discovered that one of the valve stems is incorrect and needs to be replaced. It’s only about $20, he said, but then he doesn’t know I’m not employed and every dollar counts.
I still haven’t heard from Apple One. I signed up with them about 2 weeks ago and they are showing quite a few openings, but they are not contacting me about any of them, even though I am applying for them.
Trying to figure out what else I am qualified for is very difficult. My whole life I have worked as an assistant of some sort, and been very happy doing it. It is something I know. So, trying to figure out something else is very difficult. Maybe I am stuck in my ways. I wonder if they have any kind of free testing online that would show me a different way? I’ll check into that.
Just for fun, I took a free online career test just to see what would happen. According to the results, I should be in education. The problem with this is I am 56, a bit late to start school, aside from the fact I do not have the money, or the time. If I were extremely lucky, I could be finished with school by the time I was 60. Obviously, not a good career path for me.
Interestingly, my current career path, administration, is going to be the slowest growing profession over the next several years. This was not a great help. However, I did read an article on writing a better cover letter and have accordingly changed the one I use. On Monday, I will start the rounds of looking again. I will also buy lottery tickets, just in case it could be my turn.
