In 1974, Evel Knievel attempted to jump over the Snake River Canyon in Idaho with his custom built X-1 Skycycle rocket-powered vehicle. Although, the stunt failed to accomplish the mission to blast over the river, the sheer guts that was required to strap himself into the cockpit of pretty much a tank full of rocket fuel and actually launch into the unknown is quiet impressive.
When the Chinese people put their minds to building they really build in a big way. This under-river tunnel will be able to carry three lanes of traffic 65m under the riverbed and 7.47km to the other side of the Yangtze River in Shanghai, China.
Human Cannonball
Photo Source“Not an actual photo of the Mary Connors record-breaking attempt”
In 1974, Mary Connors attempted a record-breaking shot across the River Avon near Bristol, but unfortunately this 21-year old human cannonball went down in the middle of the river. She was rescued.
The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about driving across a river is to use a bridge, but when driving the 2009 Gibbs Aquada you don't need any bridge. Just hop in and crank up the engine and drive through the water to the otherside. This bad boy can reach speeds of 110 mph on land and 45 mph on water making this a cop's worst nightmare if in hot pursuit of one these amphibioussports cars.
Give a fast motorcycle to a young person these days and they decide to cross a river as they race as fast as they can to get to the otherside. That is exactly what this fearless young man did crossing the Red River. It really does look like fun.
Sure the river needs to be narrow enough to swing across and the rope swing must be plenty long enough to project the rider at the perfect angle to get across, but you have to admit that crossing a river swinging on a rope is pretty cool.
Adventurers will like this river crossing idea, because they will get the thrills of the speed and action that a Zip Line can offer and at the Soaring Tree Top Adventures (website) they have the opportunity to cross the Animas River while zipping over taking in breathtaking views.
An Australian professional tightrope performer walked into the record books in 1873, when he walked across the Niagara Gorge using a 1,500 foot piece of rope.
Using the power and strength of your legs and feet, travelers can use a series of carefully placed stepping-stones to cross the River Mole in Southern England. Almost as good as walking on water except walking on water would be way cooler.
The Mighty Mississippi River headwaters near Lake Itasca in Minnesota is where the river is at its narrowest point and averaging only 20-30 feet wide. An Olympian long-jumper could easily clear a 20-foot wide gap and obtain bragging rights having jumped over the Mississippi River on foot.
never would have thought of some of these! The car one is pretty sweet :)

They are all interesting ways to cross a river. My favorite way to get across is by a swinging bridge. They are scary but so exciting.

Didn't Evel Kenievel die trying to cross the Grand Canyon?
How do you keep coming up with these ideas for lists?

I heard of most of them, I was going to do a piece of writing called "Would you have thought of this?!" But unfortunately someone has taken most of it |:*(
