Extraordinarily Persistent Grunters That Lurk Among Us

Is there a secret grunter around you? We all know about grunting piglets and the like, but there are also a number of more unlikely sources of the sound in our everyday lives. Grunters, like them, or hate them, have always lurked among us.

Women Tennis Players

Women tennis players have a very unpleasant, not to mention unfeminine way of grunting as they hit the ball. This loud noise is of no benefit to them or the watching audience. During this year's Wimbledon Tennis it was more prominent than usual. Now, men grunting as they put all that physical energy into serving the ball, we can accept. Women? Maybe not. Maria Sharapova is credited with the loudest grunt in women's tennis.

Chimps

Chimps make a whole range of grunting sounds as they share a meal. These range from high pitched excited sounds, down to low mutters of disagreement. This is the chimpanzee equivalent of polite dinner time conversation.

Babies

Many human babies grunt during their first few months of life. It is thought that they are experimenting with the way sound feels in their throats and it is a perfectly normal part of their development which is inclined to worry some mothers.

Pigs

Pigs communicate with a system of squeaks, squeals and grunts which range from really high pitched almost screaming noises down to deep grunting sounds as they root around. Piglets tend to have a smaller range of grunts and tend to stick to the top end of the scale.

Gym Members

Gym members who grunt while doing physical exercise like press ups, bench presses and just about anything more strenuous that standing there are perhaps the most annoying. A survey of five hundred American gym members listed these people as the most annoying co-members. Most allowed that weight lifters had a right to grunt and strain but that others merely did it for effect.

Teenagers

Many teenagers go through a stage where their communications levels descend lower that that of the chimpanzee. Their grunts hardly vary at all in tone, or pitch, and they answer any question, suggestion, or order with the same grunting sound. The only thing that can cure this is the offer of their favourite food, or money, which can quickly change the monotone grunt into a much more melodic, two form.

Weightlifters

A gentleman was reported to have been ejected from a Manhattan Gym for grunting. They claimed that the stockbroker was only grunting get attention. In actual fact he was squat lifting a weight of 500 pounds. Perhaps he had a need let alone a right to grunt.

That's quite a title. It caught my attention right away. I have to agree that grunting is often annoying and sometimes rude. I remember the days of teens grunting. I think we were supposed to guess at what they meant...ever notice that when we guessed wrong we got the louder more indignant grunt?

Very enjoyable article.

Hi Louie,

What an interesting article. The title got me immediately. Images are terrific starting with Sharapova. For one who is a tennis lover, I have had "annoying" times instead of fun-time watching the Tennis Opens. In recent years, I've put up with them, sometimes, I do something else when heavy grunters are at play.

G'day!

A very original article. I find the tennis players very funny. I think that they're impossibly loud.
