“Your focus determines your reality.” In order to take your education to the next level, you either need one of two things; a G.E.D. (Grade Equivalency Diploma), or a High School Diploma. A generalization has been made that a G.E.D. is a poor excuse for a high school drop out. Some people would like to give their education a second chance. What people don't understand is that a G.E.D. has the same equivalency of a high school diploma and it's just as hard to receive. I never knew how exciting it could be to have a graduation ceremony for getting my Grade Equivalency Diploma. It was a night filled with joy and happiness.
My night began when I walked into the Cape Cod Community College Tilden Arts Center and had to check in. “Hello Amanda. I'm so glad that you made it,” My teacher said. This was an all new experience for me. We then went upstairs and got fitted for our caps and gowns. I couldn't make up my mind on what looked right. As a group, the teachers brought us down to the ground floor. They told us what we were going to do and we were put into alphabetical order. “Can I please have Amanda Adams up front to start the line!” one of the organizers yelled. Like always, I was first. The anticipation was killing me. I walked into the auditorium with the group following me and sat in my assigned seat. I was more nervous than ever.
It was time. The lights dimmed and the spotlights for the stage were turned on. Joan Kieran walked up to the stage and said, “Can I have all of the family and friends please give a round of applause for the class of 2007.” They all cheered and we cheered back. One by one I watched patiently while the teachers and students gave each of their speeches. My mind was replaying what I was supposed to do, over and over again. My anxiety level was at its highest peak as I heard my name called. I got up and never felt so proud of myself as I walked across the stage. I shook everyone's hand, took my certificate and rose, and couldn't help but stare at my family with such a big smile. I returned to my seat and waited for everyone else to be called. The Dean took the podium and told us, “Congratulations class of 2007, you may now take your tassel and switch it to the other side.”
I walked out of the auditorium to meet my friends and family. My father looked at me with a smile and said, “I'm proud of you babe. You look beautiful.” It was one of the few times I left like everyone was noticeably proud of me. My parents took pictures of my siblings, my friends and me. I smiled in every picture. The coordinator had tables set up outside with snacks and drinks on them. My friends and I grabbed a few desserts and out the door we went to celebrate.
That ceremony was on of the happiest days of my life. When I decided to get my G.E.D I thought I was forfeiting a chance to have a graduation like most other students. When I got a letter in the mail about a graduation ceremony I was completely shocked. That's all I could have asked for. It felt so amazing to watch everyone looking back at me with such happiness on their faces. I took the next step forward after getting a G.E.D. With determination greatness can be achieved. Nobody thought I could make it, but look how far I've come.
