Horrific and sometimes humorous deaths have been a part of human history since the beginning of record keeping. Listed below are just some of the many strange ways people have died in the past half-century. Warning: not for the faint of heart. |
Woman Dies After Drinking Too Much Water
This was probably one of the most publicized cases and people often do a double-take when they hear about it. In 2007, Jennifer Strange participated in a California radio station contest to, “Hold Your Wee for a Wii.” After drinking close to or more than two gallons of water in a short period of time, Strange was the last one standing. Afterwards, however, she went home claiming she had a massive headache. She was found dead at her house a couple of days later. Several people working at the radio station were fired due to this incident since there was evidence saying that they knew about the dangers of drinking too much water but decided to ignore it.

This one was particularly awful and heartbreaking on many levels. Abigail Taylor, a six-year-old girl, had part of her intestines sucked out when she sat on a pool drain in a shallow kiddie pool in Minnesota, 2006. The cover for the drain was apparently missing and the powerful suction, well it did its thing and it wasn't pretty. Although she did get transplants of her bowel, pancreas and liver several months later, she died due to complications with the new organs. I really think the title says it all. Darwin Awards candidate here. In 2005 Kenneth Pinyan decided it was prudent to satisfy his sexual desires by going to a farm and doing it with a full sized stallion. Needless to say, he showed up dead at a hospital a couple of hours later with severe internal injuries including to his colon. Nurses say he was brought in and left in their ER on a wheelchair, presumably already dead.
There was also some controversy with another man who was filming this whole thing, and then with the horse itself... but the moral of this story is the same: Sex with large animals is bad, very bad. Washington State later outlawed bestiality its filming. Korean Drops Dead After 50 Hours of Gaming
The case of Lee Seung Seop is just a sad, sad reminder of why playing StarCraft for more than two days straight is a bad idea. The 28-year-old had apparently been recently fired from his job for, you guessed it, missing work because he was spending too much time playing computer games. He went to an internet café in August 3rd, 2005 and didn't come out until two days later, after his heart quit from exhaustion and dehydration. Ironically, his collapse came just a few minutes after he had just told his friends he was going to go home and sleep after they tracked him down. Most deaths are horrific, but some are just plain stupid. In 1995 a Polish farmer by the name of Krystof Azninski chopped off his own head with a chainsaw. Here's what happened: He and a couple of his friends were drinking, exhausted their things to do and decided to play some “men's games.” Well first they got naked - possibly to show off their manly man bodies - and did various things like throw frozen vegetables at each other. One of the men somehow got a hold of a chainsaw and started swinging it around. Then, either by accident or on purpose (crazy drunks) he cut off his own foot. It seems that the curse of the Lee family lives on when Bruce Lee's son, Brandon Lee, was shot by a prop gun during the filming of his breakout movie, “The Crow” in 1993. What happened was that the “blanks” used in the gun were hastily made. Instead of using real blanks, which contains no bullet, the crew simply removed the gunpowder from a real cartridge. During rehearsals beforehand, the small primer still left in the cartridge was enough to shoot the bullet into the barrel of the gun, where it got stuck. This was unnoticed by the crew, and so the bullet was still lodged in the gun when another blank was loaded into it! The second time the gun was fired, the explosion was enough to force the stuck bullet out, hitting Brandon Lee fatally in the spine. Diver Hits His Head on Platform
Did you cringe when you watched the summer Olympics diving event? Most have never seen it happen but it's still in the back of their minds when they watch a diver go head-over-heals off the platform and land gracefully into the water below. However, it did happen in 1983 when professional diver Sergei Chalibashvili attempted a three-and-a-half reverse somersault in the tuck position during the World University Games. His head struck the concrete platform with such force that spectators say they felt it shake. And the sickening crunch that followed was more than enough evidence as to Chalibashvili's fate as he fell sprawled into the pool. He died a week later, never waking from his coma. Truly like something from a bad movie. In 1983, four divers in Norway had just came up from a deep sea dive in a submersible and were sitting in an decompression chamber used to safely bring divers from high pressure atmospheres back to normal pressures.
Then, either by accident or some weird miscommunication, a clamp connecting the chamber to the outside was opened and the pressure inside dropped from nine atmospheres to one almost instantaneously. The diver which was closest to the door died (hopefully) almost instantaneously as his body literally exploded from the inside as the gas in his body expanded to more than nine times in size in the blink of an eye. Basically it was like over-filling a rubber balloon really, really fast. Reports say parts of his horrifically dismembered body were found 40 feet away and outside the chamber - which had a doorway of only two feet.
The other four died comparatively normal deaths by similar complications and parts of the chamber striking them at high speeds.
