Can You Complete the Quote?

Many famous people in literature and the arts have had something to say about females. See if you can fill in the blanks.

There have been many famous quotations throughout history dedicated to the female gender. I have purposely searched in older literature to find a few that are not as commonly known, because I know we have very clever readers at Triond. Here are just a few. See if you can fill in the blanks.

  1. “Girls just wanna have _____.” Cyndi Lauper
  2. “A woman is only a woman, but a good _____ is a _____.” Rudyard Kipling
  3. “The female in the species is _________than the male.” Rudyard Kipling
  4. “God could not be everywhere and therefore he made ________.” an old Jewish proverb
  5. “A virtuous woman is a _______ to her husband.” Proverbs 12:4
  6. “She's _______ and therefore to be wooed, she is woman, therefore to be ___.” King Henry VI, Part I, Act V, Scene 3, Line 78
  7. “A _______ and changeful thing is woman ever.” Aeneid. Book IV, Line 569
  8. “Women are the ______ of life: they are troublesome, and hinder us in the great march, and yet we cannot be without "em.” The Tragedy of Brennoralt (1646) Act 1, Scene 1
  9. “Who does not love wine, women, and song remains a ____ his whole life long.” Couplet Johann Henrich Voss (1751-1826)
  10. “Never does one feel oneself so utterly helpless as in trying to speak comfort for great bereavement. I will not try it. ____is the only comforter for the loss of a mother.” Jane Welsh Carlyle (1801-1866) to Thomas Carlyle on December 27, 1853.
  11. “As unto the bow the cord is, so unto the man is woman, though she bends him, she obeys him, though she draws him, yet she _____, useless each without the other.” The Song of Hiawatha (1855) Part X
  12. “The hand that rocks the _______ is the hand that rules the world.” William Ross Wallace (1819-1881) The Hand That Rules the World Stanza 1

In reading the older literature, I became increasingly grateful that I live in present times. It must have been very difficult for women in the 1600, 1700 and 1800s. While not agreeing totally with women"s lib, as I like to be treated like a lady, I am grateful to those who went before us, and conquered many of the old mindsets. Women still struggle to make a fair living, and many women raise children on their own with little or no assistance, but another great quote is “We've come a long way, Baby.” Who said that?

Sidmelo, You have a delightful sense of humor. Perhaps I should have included that one, but don't you think we're worth it at least some of the time? Thanks for the comment.
