No one is quite sure exactly who invented Ice Cream, but we all know that ice cream is probably the most common dessert and that it's been around for ages.
But exactly how long has it been around?
Well, believe it or not, ice cream has been traced back to at least the 4th century BC! That's longer than most of us thought it had been around. The Roman emperor Nero ordered his servants to go to the mountains and bring back fresh ice which was then combined with fruit toppings and served to the emperor. But this wasn't the ice cream as we know it. King Tang of Shang in China had a recipe for milk and ice concoctions.
When ice cream first came to the US, many famous people served it to their guests. Some of these people include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Governor Bladen of Maryland.
In 1774, ice cream was first sold in the US, by a London caterer named Philip Lenzi. The first ice cream parlor in the US opened in 1776. Ice cream was originally called “iced cream” but over time, people began to call it ice cream.
In 1832, Augustus Jackson from Philadelphia invented some new ice cream recipes. In 1846, Nancy Johnson patented the Hand-cranked freezer, which she sold (the patent) to William Young for $200.
In 1851, Jacob Fussell started the first commercial production of ice cream.
